The Festival du nouveau cinema copresents The Sound of Insects – Records of a Mummy at the RIDM

November 20 2009

As part of the 12th Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal, the Festival du nouveau cinema is proud to copresent The Sound of Insects – Records of a Mummy by Swiss filmmaker Peter Liechti. Between documentary and fiction, The Sound of Insects tells the astonishing tale of a Japanese hunter in a remote and idyllic forest who committed suicide by self-imposed starvation. His mummified corpse was found along with a detailed journal of his agony. Based on this journal, filmmaker Peter Liechti built a tantalizing exploration of the mysteries of death.
The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy is preceded by the short film Ali Shan by Yung Chang. The two films will be presented at the Cinéma Parallèle on Saturday November 21st, at 15:00 (3536, boulevard Saint-Laurent, Montréal). For more information on the RIDM: http://www.ridm.qc.ca

FIVE FILMS PRESENTED AT FNC OUT IN THEATRES:

October 23 2009

Five films presented at the Festival du nouveau cinema out in theatres in Montreal this week:
- UN ANGE À LA MER (ANGEL AT SEA): a difficult and disturbing subject matter — the psychological abuse of children — is treated with sensitivity and subtlety in this award-winning (Karlovy Vary) first feature.
-LA TETA ASUSTADA: This story of a young maid, spiritually and emotionally adrift in big-city Lima, reveals the shadowy, lasting ramifications of trauma and terror, engendered by political repression, violence and rape. AQCC critics award and interpretation price for actress Magaly Solier at the Festival du nouveau cinema.
-AN EDUCATION: In 1961, just before London starts Swinging, a young woman from the suburbs meets a charming hustler. A tale of unreasonable passion set in a fascinating recreation of the decade that would change the world. Carey Mulligan is extraordinary.
-LES BEAUX GOSSES: Sattouf’s hilarious film on the goofs and gallantries of teens in the new Paris. This first feature from France’s top comic artist is smart and fresh, with a deep affection for everything ridiculous in human relationships.
- TAQWACORE: THE BIRTH OF PUNK ISLAM: After RiP: A Remix Manifesto and Up the Yangtze, a documentary on the new Islamic Punk scene. Muslim youth join the International Rockers of the World! Taqwacore was presented as opening film of the Temps 0 section at the Festival du nouveau cinema.

Do not miss these films! For more information, visit our programmation online and our video section for interviews and trailers…

The lives of the families dealing with this problem are extremely challenging, but to be impoverished and living in a developing country with this disease is even more daunting. Diabetes is emerging as one of the most serious health problems of our time; a global epidemic with devastating human, social and economic consequences. This disease claims as many lives per year as HIV/AIDS."
