This cinematic UFO from Iran immerses the spectator in an apocalyptic scenario of lethal bacteria run rampant. A man dressed in a metallic suit is living in an aluminum-clad trailer. His astronaut-grade clothing protects his body from overheating due to magnetic radiation. At night, he mounts his motorcycle and travels the abandoned streets of Tehran in search of bacteria. Taboor is an unconventional road movie in which the anonymous hero Rohammad Rabini struggles for survival while protecting his city’s darkness-engulfed remains. Everything is minimal in this film: the narrative, the characters, their dialogue, the music, even the lighting. Yet the protagonist mesmerizes us as he roams through the disease-filled domain, and we are enthralled by the film’s kaleidoscopic imagery. Taboor addresses the imminence of death in a context of extreme adversity. Hypnotic and disconcerting, the only way out is through the light.
