Synopsis :

A small village near the border of Galicia and Portugal, lost in the immense forest surrounding it. Every day, the inhabitants of this beautiful and secret corner of Spain live and work, tucked away from the rest of the world, following a routine whose rhythms reach back to time immemorial. Nothing forces them to stay. But beyond the trees, beyond this self-reliant life, is another life possible? Would the sun’s rays burn their eyes? Is the apocalypse inevitable? Alternating between past and future, reality and myth, documentary and fiction, the experimental Spanish documentary maker Eloy Enciso (Pic-nic) revels in the wrong turns that lead to roads less travelled, where imagination is still the best guide and legend walks hand in hand with a moving reflection on disappearance. The last film screened at Locarno, Arraianos relies on detailed observation of the villagers’ way of life and dialogue from Marinhas del Valle’s 1960s-era O Bosque, a lyrical, existential play that opens access to the local psyche and inspires the filmmaker’s naturalist approach.
