Synopsis :

Steven, 60, is searching for his soulmate online. He’s also obsessed with Asian women—a fixation that takes him to China to meet the women with whom he connects over the Internet. After a few fiascos, he meets Sandy, who’s just turned 30. He convinces her to come and live with him in the United States, with the promise of marriage and a better future. Of course, the fact that Steven speaks no Mandarin and Sandy, no English, does nothing to bridge the cultural gap between the couple... Back on U.S. soil, as Sandy faces up to the harsh reality of isolation and Steven watches his dream dissolve into a nightmare, filmmaker Lum—herself of Chinese origin—is soon embroiled in the fractious dynamic that arises between them. Seeking Asian Female trains its lens on what Lum calls “yellow fever”: the marked interest exhibited by certain white men in women from the Far East. In debunking the myth of the submissive Asian woman waiting for her man to come home, the film also examines the aspirations of one Chinese immigrant, whose determination to improve her lot is pitted against the culture shock that leaves her tremendously vulnerable.
