With this film, Wang continues his exploration of Chinese workers and peasants, plunging us into the everyday lives of ten-year-old Yingying, six-year-old Zhenzhen and four-year-old Fenfen, whose singsong names belie a grim existence. The three sisters have only a small plot of arid land to farm in order to survive, and their young bodies already bear the marks of their heavy burden. As with all his films, Wang manages to capture the toll that history has taken on his subjects.
