Canadian actress and director Sarah Polley interviews family members and friends as she delves into her family history, the sometimes-rocky relationship between her actor parents, and the art of telling a story on film. Interspersed with actual and fictional family footage, this feature documentary reveals a fascinating range of views about her mother, Diane, who died of cancer when Polley was 11, and her father, Michael, who also narrates the piece. Stories We Tell unfolds like a detective story complete with a mystery, false leads, conflicting accounts, clues and a surprise ending. To make the film, which screened at the Venice and Toronto festivals, Polley shuttles back and forth between Toronto and Montreal. The people she interviews are engaging and go all out to answer her probing questions on events dating back to 1978. The Polley clan, which includes several artists, tells tales that are witty, moving and touchingly authentic. A doc and a making-of all in one, Stories We Tell is an original journey offering a deep reflection on how time shapes memory.
