Digital cinema: the mini-DV
Around the ARTE collection Petites Caméras: the pen-camera

Since the objective of the forum is to open up the subject of new technologies, after discussing HD films, we’ll go to the other end of the spectrum and talk about the spectacular rise of the mini-DV, a tool originally aimed at the general public.

Agnès Varda, Claude Miller or Jacques Fansten, all well-known directors, haven’t hesitated to sing the praises of these compact cameras (see the section dedicated to digital cinema). To listen to them talk, one quickly understands that the interest of the tool is altogether sociological (discreet, the camera can be used to shoot in places where a crew wouldn’t be allowed), economical (lower production costs, portability, adaptability) and artistic, three aspects intrinsically linked to each other.

Jacques Fansten is the producer and the initiator of the Petites Caméras collection from ARTE. Three works from this collection are presented this year at the Festival. With him, are four directors who have used digital cameras in their own special way.

Claude Miller is the director of Of Women and Magic.
Jonathan Nossiter is the director of Signs and Wonders.
Vincent Dieutre is the director of Tenebrae Lessons.
Philippe Falardeau is the director of La Moitié gauche du frigo.
